GO FAST TIPS

PINEWOOD RACER PRE - RACE CHECK LIST

  1. Car body is cut to a very thin shape. The front and rear are rounded like an airplane wing. Fast Cars Have A Thin Shape
  2. Wheelbase (distance between axles) is as long as possible (if local rules allow). This will improve stability, tracking, and speed. Long Wheelbase Cars Go Faster.
  3. Car weight is right on the maximum (usually 5 oz.) - not a gram over or under. Heavier Cars Go Faster.
  4. Car weight is placed in the rear so the fore / aft balance point is about 1 1/4" in front of the rear axles. Rear Weighted Cars Go Faster.
  5. The axles have been sanded and polished until smooth. Friction is the Enemy of Speed. Reduction of diameter is okay. Smaller Diameter Axles Go Faster.
  6. The axles have been glued into the body slots with epoxy to keep them from slipping out. Allow 3/32" to 1/8" clearance between wheel and body.
  7. Wheels are sanded smooth or turned on a lathe (if local rules allow). Lathe Turned Wheels Go Faster.
  8. One of the front wheels does not touch track. Three Wheels Go Faster.
  9. Wheels, axles, and the side of the body have been well lubricated with a Graphite - Moly combination. Well Lubricated Cars Go Faster.

Rocket Derby
Using gold spray painted fishing weight on top of car, to reach 5 oz.

Fast Pinewood Derby
Another example of using fishing weight on top of the car.

On this derby car the additional weight was place under the car. The day of the race I used a knife and shaved off lead to meet the 5 oz. weight limit
